Chernobylite is a curious mash-up of ideas orbiting a pretty stiff first-person shooter. You take on the role of Igor Khymynyuk, a physicist who worked at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant at the time of the accident on April 26, 1986. Tatyana, Igor’s wife, was also present, but she had gone the night of the disaster. After seeing visions of Tatyana in and around the power plant, Igor travels to the Exclusion Zone 30 years later to hunt for her. It’s partly a first-person shooter, yet you can get through a lot of it without firing a single round. It’s part survival game, half crafting station, bedding, and even mushroom gardens, as you gather resources to expand your base with crafting stations, bedding, and even mushroom gardens.

Later in the game, it becomes feasible to kill Igor without sacrificing any items in order to experiment with different possibilities. Igor and his Olivier reconvene at a warehouse on the outskirts of the Zone after the raid, in which Igor retrieves a chunk of Chernobylite to fuel a handheld portal device of his own design. Chernobylite is a material that has the ability to create wormholes in time and space. It can transport you from one location to another, and it can even transport you back in time via a dreamscape of floating rocks and non-Euclidean geometries.
